Colonel Royal P. Mortenson served in the United States Marine Corps for thirty years. Following his retirement from the USMC, he served as Director of the Illinois Fire Service Institute for nearly ten years. He has commanded at every level, from Lieutenant to Colonel, to include complex combat operations in the Middle East. Colonel Mortenson has national security level planning experience as the Director of Afghanistan Plans and Policy Development for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
His years as the Director of one of the premier state fire training institutions changed the landscape of leadership development training and curriculum for the fire service on the national level.
These unique experiences provide Colonel Mortenson with insight and perspective on leadership development, decision making, and the management of complex organizations at every level. He is an accomplished speaker, presenting internationally to audiences with broad interests and backgrounds.

Julian ‘Dale” Alford is a Marine Corps Major General (Ret) with deep expertise in diverse fields such as diplomacy, emergency and crisis management, pandemic management, construction management, advanced research and development, intelligence, history, teaching, recruiting, training, and warfighting.
He is a decisive, results-driven, people oriented leader with 34 years of experience building teams from the ground up. A leader with high emotional intelligence who possesses a unique ability to manage talent and position employees for success.
General Alford is a strategic and critical thinker with a vast depth of knowledge and an intuitive ability to teach and mentor his subordinates. He is widely respected for the ability to “cut through the clutter” of complex issues and translate them into lay terms. He has a strong ability to inspire fierce loyalty and respect from subordinates, peers, and seniors.
Colonel Mortenson uses our U.S. Constitution and the Preamble in a creative and unique way to illustrate the beliefs and personal qualities that make up a good leader.
